It Really Is That Deep
The high price of spiritual ignorance
I am often perplexed when people say, “It’s not that deep,” or “Not everything is spiritual.”
Something inside me rejects that.
Whether we want to acknowledge it or not, we are in a war. The battle doesn’t stop just because we choose not to believe it exists or because we think it doesn’t “take all that”. The reality is that it takes all that, and then some.
A few nights ago, I was awakened at 3 AM. I am no stranger to early mornings; it has been a way of life for a while now. Typically, I sit on the edge of the bed and collect myself before heading downstairs. But this morning was different.
As I sat there, I saw a light click on down the hallway. I knew it was one of my children, so I inquired who it was. They told me they had woken up abruptly and felt that “something was not right.” After I gathered my things, they met me downstairs and revealed a recurring dream they had been having over a period of time.
Immediately, the Holy Spirit brought a specific scripture to my mind: Luke 22, where Jesus tells Peter that Satan desires to sift him as wheat. But, He was praying for him that his faith did not fail, and that once he returned he would be able to strengthen his brothers.
My child knew exactly which scripture I was referring to because they had just read it a few days prior. We talked, we processed, and then we spent time in prayer together. As they returned to bed, I sat in the quiet and realized I had just experienced another “Holy Moment.” My Father woke me up in just enough time to collect myself so I could be alert and ready when my child woke up troubled.
Contrary to popular opinion, everything is that deep. The battle rages around us regardless of our acknowledgment. God sent a message through the prophet Hosea that my mind returns to often: “My people perish for lack of knowledge.” (Hosea 4:6).
When we look at the heart of Hosea’s message, we see a sobering picture of what happens when we choose to look away from the truth. God wasn’t just addressing a crowd; He was specifically holding the leaders accountable for a willful rejection of spiritual knowledge.
Because they turned their backs on the things of God, God in turn rejected their service. This wasn’t just a minor oversight. It was a devastating neglect of duty that left an entire nation defenseless and headed for destruction.
Perhaps most heartbreaking is the ripple effect of this ignorance. God warned that because the leaders “forgot” His Word, the consequences would reach even their children. Through the painful lens of Hosea’s own marriage, we see that our lack of intimacy with God and spiritual awareness isn’t just a mistake; it is a wound to the heart of a Father who desires a people who truly know Him and His ways.
What we don’t know can and will hurt us. This is why we must desire and pursue spiritual truth in God.
I often wonder: How is it that people who do not love or serve God are often more aware of and active in the realm of the spirit than those professing to follow Him? When they reveal their spiritual activity, we are quick to holler, “That’s witchcraft!” But the reality is they are often more disciplined with their “illegal access” to the spirit realm than those of us who have entered through the Right Door.
We cannot afford to stay asleep. We must learn and stand on the truth:
Proverbs 1:7: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.”
Isaiah 5:13: “Therefore my people are gone into captivity because they have no knowledge.”
John 8:32: “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
Knowledge leads to freedom. Ignorance leads to captivity.
No, we are not going to have the revelation of everything perfectly all the time in all things, but we must not posture our hearts to believe there is no revelation simply because something feels trivial or non-spiritual. The Father is always moving in our lives, even in the seasons where He is quiet.
What we see in the natural is the result of what is taking place in the spiritual realm.
I am so thankful that Jesus is continually interceding for us. Like He told Peter, may we pray that we do not enter into temptation.
And when it’s all said and done, may the Lord receive the reward of His suffering: a Bride that is fully aware and fully alive.
Because yes, it really is that deep.
God bless you, and I’ll see you next time if it be the Lord’s will.
